Fitness

Doctors agree that swimming is an excellent choice of fitness for just about everyone, especially those who have physical limitations or who find other forms of exercise painful. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both women and men in the United States.
  • Swimming can help reduce and possibly prevent high blood pressure, which lowers your risk for heart disease and stroke.
The body needs physical exercise to remain happy and healthy.
  • Swimming works all muscles without putting strain on your body. It’s regarded as the best all-around exercise that allows you to lose and maintain weight.
  • When you watch television, your body’s metabolism drops almost to sleeping levels.
A 145 lb runner can easily burn 300 calories in 30 minutes.
  • On average, a swimmer can burn as many calories in an hour as a runner who runs six miles in one hour.
Excessive or prolonged stress and anxiety produces a physiological flood of hormones and chemicals into your system that can wreak havoc with your body’s delicate internal balance. Links have been found between the ill effects of stress and anxiety and a decline in immune system function and your body’s ability to ward off illness.

Pool Shapes

When choosing a fiberglass pool, one of the first choices to be made is the pool shape and size. It is important to make sure that you or your pool builder measures the space available for a pool; remember to leave enough room around the pool for at least 3' of concrete to go around the pool. This ensures that your pool is secured properly. You should never leave the coping of the pool exposed. Aside from securing the pool in place, it's just plain ugly and looks like a tub in the ground and can void you pool's warranty with some manufacturers.

There are many shapes to choose from like rectangle, classic, roman, custom, kidney, and free form. The shape you choose should complement your backyard and work well with the other elements on the exterior and interior of your home. If you live in a modern home with straight lines, a free form pool may not look as nice as a rectangle or classic pool; unless, of course, you are going for that look.

As important as the shape are the dimensions of the pool. Keep in mind the uses that you have in mind for the pool. If you plan on spending a great deal of time playing water sports like volleyball, you may want to consider a sports pool; they are shaped like a ‘V' on the bottom. If your friends and family enjoy swimming in deeper water, you may want to consider a pool over 7' or 8' deep, which also adds the ability to include a jump board for added fun. Other pools have a gradual slop or flat bottom, depending on your needs. The important thing is to consider what you will be using the pool for and select a shape that will accommodate your needs.

Pool Colors for a Fiberglass Pool

The color that you select for your pool will affect the pool's overall appearance and will set the stage for your backyard. Standard colors with several fiberglass manufacturers include white and light blue gel coat, both of which give the pool a light blue appearance. The white gel coat can seem a little bright on a sunny day, whereas the light blue tones that brightness down a little bit. Some manufacturers offer various colors of gel coat and even offer it in custom colors.

Specialty colors are also available with some fiberglass manufacturers. There are basically three different color processes available: gel coat, Granicoat®, and hand mixtures. Gel coat finishes are nice if you like a solid color and hand mixtures give the surface of your pool depth and dimension. Granicoat® is a product that is available in kitchen countertops and was modified for swimming pools. The finish is a flat color and very much resembles old school kitchen countertops.

Hand mixtures come in a variety of colors, and high end manufacturers can custom design a specific color just for you. Standard colors available with hand mixed colors include different shades of blue, brown, and grey. The darker the mixture, the darker your pool will look. The brown mixtures tend to make the water look aquamarine with hints of green, which is nice if you are trying to give your backyard a natural look. The grey finishes tend to make the water look a muted federal blue, which works well with modern and contemporary backyards. Your pool's color will not look exactly the same all of the time; it depends a lot on the cloud coverage. The bottom line is figure out what general color you want your water to look like, then choose a finish and color that will complement your backyard.
